THE HOPE OF A SAFE AND CHEERFUL HOLIDAY: EVEN UNDER THE REALITIES OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

holiday-msg-2.jpg

THE END-OF-THE-YEAR HOLIDAY SEASON BRINGS HAPPINESS AND CHEER TO HOUSEHOLDS EVERYWHERE, BUT THAT IS NOT ALWAYS A REALITY FOR SOME.

During this time of the year, in Florida, there is an increased rate of incidents reported to law enforcement involving domestic violence. The varied reasons for the increase in intimate partner violence could be attributed to various factors, which could include substance abuse, economic instability and strain, holiday stressors or the prevalence of annual divorce rates.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, for both men and women, divorced or separated persons were subjected to the highest rates of intimate partner victimization.

The American Medical Association reports that family violence costs the Nation approximately $5 to $10 billion annually in medical expenses, police and court costs, shelters and foster care, sick leave, absenteeism and non-productivity.

Although an abuser has to ultimately decide to change and stop the violence, there may be some techniques that family and friends can do in the attempt to make victims of domestic violence a little safer this year.

The following are tips on how to avoid or reduce violent conflicts during the holiday season:

  • Suggestions for Conflict Resolution in Domestic Violence Situations
  • Reduce or limit alcohol consumption at holiday festivities.
  • Designate a seating plan for dinner where couples are at opposite ends of the table.
  • Attempt to stay neutral if a conflict does ensue.
  • Don't be a problem solver; this could only escalate a circumstance or issue.

Unfortunately, Domestic Violence never takes a holiday! So, if you, or someone you know, is a victim of domestic violence please take action and call 9-1-1 or contact your local police department.
